What is A Sitemap?
Sitemap informs search engines about URLs of a website to crawl. A sitemap is an XML file that contains list of URLs of a website. XML Sitemap is like a directory of all pages on a website or blog. Search Engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing can use these sitemap to discover all pages on your website.
Sitemaps also allow webmasters to include additional informations about each URL. Sitemap is a URL inclusion protocol which allow search engine bots to crawl website more intelligently and efficiently.
How to Add XML Sitemap to Blogger Blogs?
A sitemap should contain all the URLs of a website or blog but default sitemap of Blogger blogs have only 25 more recent posts. So, your older posts, that are not included in default sitemap, will never be indexed by search engines. Here I will show you that how easily you can add a custom XML sitemap to your Blogger blogs which will have all the web pages of your blog.
- Login to your Blogger Dashboard and then go to “Search Preferences” under “Settings”. Enable “Custom robots.txt”. A box will appear under this.
- Enter the URL of your own Blogger blog at the place mentioned in the code below. Then copy the following text code and paste in the box that was appeared on Search Preferences Setting Page of your Blog’s Dashboard.
- Click on Save button and you have created XML Sitemap for your Blogger blog.
Above method is valid for both; regular Blogger blogs with .blogspo.com address and self hosted Blogger blogs that use TLD custom domain name.
Above code is valid for a Blogger blog with up to 500 posts. If your blog has more than 500 posts, you can even then use above code with minor modification. In that case, you can add lines below the last line of above code.
For 501~1000 posts add following line.
For 1001~1500 posts also add another line.
You can add as many sitemaps as you want.
